Revelation 17 and 18: Babylon the Great, refers to a symbolic system of evil that includes both a revived, rebuilt literal city in Mesopotamia (present day Iraq) and a corrupt, idolatrous religious and economic system, with some interpretations also linking it to Rome or any other powerful center of evil that persecutes God's people and pursues worldly wealth. The text uses the name Babylon to evoke the ancient empire known for its rebellion against God. Its idolatry and its destruction of Jerusalem.
