I was with Menachem Begin on the 30th of June, my birthday, in 1980, and I brought him a gift. It was the book Israel, America’s Key to Survival that I had just written. As soon as I handed it to him, He said, “Well, let me hold it up for the cameras and endorse your book!” And I said, “No, no, Mr. Prime Minister, please don’t do that. You haven’t read it. You might find things in it that you don’t like.” “Don’t worry about it, Mike. I’m a short prime minister. If they criticize me, I’ll stand on the newspaper, so it’ll make me look taller. Besides, tomorrow’s fish is wrapped in today’s news.” He held the book and endorsed it. I was shocked.
In 1981, I was with the Prime Minister again. I had just hosted an event in Washington, D.C., and my speech was put in the congressional record. I gave him a copy of the speech, and he asked me a question. “How come you never meet with your Jewish relatives?” “Well, I don’t know most of them because my mother married a Christian, and he wouldn’t let her visit her Jewish relatives. He didn’t like Jews.”
“Let me introduce you,” he replied. So he picked up the phone and called a gentleman by the name of Nat Lefkowitz. As he waited for Nat to answer, he told me, “Michael, your grandfather’s name was Sam, and his sister was Sally. And Sally married Nat.” I then had the pleasure of meeting Nat and Sally by phone. When we hung up the phone, I said, “Mr. Prime Minister, how do you know them?” “He’s the president of the William Morris Advertising Agency, which has a contract with the state of Israel.”
When you step out in faith and walk with God toward your dreams, it’s amazing the connections that open up—and amazing the connections that God put in place decades earlier. A few years ago, I turned on the news and realized that Donald Trump was going to be flying to Jerusalem in three days. Suddenly, my imagination went back to the Bible story of King Cyrus, who was not a Jew, but did so much for the nation of Israel. So I contacted a major advertising company and told them I wanted digital billboards—the largest ones in the nation of Israel—with a picture of Donald Trump, calling him “King Cyrus.”
To my shock and amazement, those billboards appeared all over the world in India, even in Iran, in Russia, in Saudi Arabia, and in Great Britain. And everybody was suddenly interested in the story of Cyrus, including everyone in the nation of Israel. They were talking about Cyrus. They were reading the Bible stories. And my phone was ringing constantly with media requests for interviews about the ad campaign.
I was invited to the Knesset, which is Israel’s parliament, when Donald Trump spoke. It was a great honor and an example of God’s favor. Astonishingly, as we were walking close to the Knesset, a car drove up, and the driver said, “Mr. Evans, get in.” And they took me directly to the Knesset door, and put a gold security band on my wrist. This band granted access to the highest level of the Knesset. How did all that happen? It happened because of a dream—and continued sensitivity and obedience to the Holy Spirit.
You have two choices in life: to seek man’s affirmation or God’s affirmation. That can only come when you put all your faith in God. Joseph put all his faith in God. His brothers threw him into a pit and sold him as a slave. He was falsely accused and put in prison. But prison was his path to the palace. Joseph went to jail to become prime minister, not some Ivy League university. Jeremiah, the suffering prophet, was beaten and put in stocks and sank in the mud of an empty well, and his scrolls were burned because of his words. Yet he still put all his faith in God and kept proclaiming the Word of the Lord.
King David said in Psalm 23, “He prepares a table before me in the presence of my enemies.” All kings celebrated victories with a big banquet, but David said that while he was in the midst of the battle, he shouted, “Rak Chazak Amats!” God’s war cry. This ancient Hebrew war cry led God’s warriors for centuries. “Rak chazak amats” translates to “Be strong, courageous, and tenacious.” Joshua 1:9 reads, “Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
