The announcement that Russia is annexing the four partly or mostly occupied regions of eastern Ukraine following a referendum that supposedly expressed the desire of the people living there to join Russia is the most dangerous thing that’s happened in Ukraine so far. Russia will claim any attacks by Ukrainian forces as an act of aggression against their homeland, thus justifying an even harsher military response. It is not by accident that prominent Russian officials have been talking so much about using nuclear weapons.
